Dear [MP Name]

I am one of an estimated 2,000 victims of the Equitable Life scandal living in your constituency who lost hard-earned pension savings because of a decade of maladministration by government departments and their regulators.

While I receive an annual compensation payment from the Equitable Life Payment Scheme, which supposedly covers my losses because of the maladministration, my pension continues to decline year on year. However, some 895,000 other savers in Equitable Life have received only 22% of their acknowledged losses back. Around 10,000 of my fellow With-Profits Annuitants were also unfairly excluded from receiving any compensation simply because they bought their annuity before September 1992. They are the most elderly and vulnerable victims of the Equitable Life scandal.

Shockingly, it seems around £180m – or over 10% – of the money that was allocated for compensating victims is set to be kept by the Treasury, against the intentions of Parliament.

The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has said: “We must restore the sense that this is a country that can rectify injustice, particularly when carried out by institutes of the state.” I agree. I strongly believe that where the state accepts responsibility for a mistake, it should provide full and timely redress. I imagine and hope you do too.

The Government is doing the right thing by fully compensating victims of the infected blood and post office scandals, where it has also accepted responsibility for failures. The same principle should apply to victims of the Equitable Life scandal, who desperately need their heard-earned pension savings in their remaining years.

I hope you will help the victims of this scandal to get what they are owed by writing to the Prime Minister and Chancellor and by raising this issue in the House. I also hope that you will help me and other With-Profits Annuitants hold the Prudential to account for its appalling record since it took over Equitable Life policies.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Your sincerely,
